TELECOMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM
911 IMPLEMENTATION UPDATE
PRINCE ALBERT 911 CENTER
Telecommunications Program Update
Please continue to send in applications for the grant money. This is the only way we can convince the Government to carry the program over for another year.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
In 1997, at the SAFC Conference in Prince Albert, the Honourable Carol Tiechrob, Minister for Municipal Government, announced a four year, $2,000,000 program to assist municipalities in upgrading their fire department telecommunications systems to allow them to communicate with their dispatch centers, between departments and between other emergency response agencies.
The program was to provide $500,000 per year over four years. The province was divided into 11 districts for planning purposes and $10,000 was allotted from the fund for each district to prepare a plan. In addition, the SAFC was hired by the rovincial Government to develop a "footprint" plan which could be used in all districts with minimal changes. After much consultation with fire departments, municipalities and communications providers, this "footprint" plan was completed and forwarded to the Government in January 2000.
During the planning stages, the government agreed to role the unused money into future years as the purchase of equipment could not go ahead until the plan was complete. We are now in year four of the four-year program and there is a lot of money that has not been allocated. There is no guarantee that the government will role the money ahead if it is not used this year. It is imperative that municipalities move ahead with this program before the end of the fiscal year on March 31, 2002.
